On Friday, March 30: Learn more about Leonard Peltier and make the call to the White House comment line at 202-456-1111. Tell them you are requesting Presidential Clemency for Federal Prisoner Leonard Peltier #89637-132.
American Indian Movement activist and political prisoner Leonard Peltier was convicted and sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment for supposedly shooting FBI agents during a 1975 conflict at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He has been incarcerated for over three decades. His last parole hearing was in July 2009 where his request for parole was denied. His next scheduled hearing isn’t until 2024.
While supporters have been working tirelessly for years to secure Leonard’s release, activism demanding his freedom has recently spiked. In 2010, Amnesty International placed his case under the “Unfair Trials” category of its Annual Report: USA 2010. Late 2011, the National Congress of American Indians unanimously passed a resolution in support of Peltier’s release. Aaron Mirmalek, Peltier’s cousin and hip hop activist, has been working with the hip hop community to create an album as a benefit and to increase awareness (watch a video about it below).
This winter and spring, AIM West and The Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee (LPDOC) organized the ongoing Leonard Peltier Walk for Human Rights and the Oglala Commemoration Committee is already organizing for the 13th Annual Oglala Commemoration on June 26 2012 in Oglala, South Dakota.
I just received the following information from the LPDOC Chapter Albuquerque on Facebook:
