Submission Guidelines – Solidarity

Submission Guidelines

Types of Content

We publish a variety of content, including but not limited to the following:

  • articles that report on developments in social movements both domestic and abroad, especially those that contain an element of critical analysis as well as reporting.
  • arguments or position statements on significant questions of political theory or practice.
  • interviews with Left activists or intellectuals.
  • other forms of media such as cartoons, photo essays, videos or other recordings, etc. We encourage submission of more creative forms of content than just text articles!

We welcome submissions that have already been published elsewhere, provided the other publications consent to re-publication of the content in question.

Style and Formatting Guidelines

We encourage submissions to adhere as closely as possible to the following guidelines. These guidelines are not set in stone, but they do reflect the types of content we are most interested in publishing.

  1. Content should be accessible to a fairly wide audience. Avoid jargon as much as possible. Spell out acronyms at least the first time they’re used (with the acronym in brackets after the full name). When referring to people, organizations, facts, or ideas that some readers might not be familiar with, explain what you’re talking about. In general, just be conscious that not all readers will be familiar with the specific ideas, people, and events you are discussion, and it is better to err on the side of providing a brief explanation.
  2. Use short and clear sentences and short paragraphs. Introduce paragraphs with sentences that clearly guide readers through the content of the rest of the paragraph.
  3. Use clear and informative titles and subtitles. Readers should immediately know what an article will be about when they read the title, and where possible the text should be broken up with subtitles that just as clearly guide readers through the article.
  4. When referring to other articles or websites, provide hyperlinks for them. It’s also helpful to provide links for organizations or events that you refer to.
  5. If possible, submit relevant images along with the text of your article. (But please be sure you have permission to publish those images!)

How to Submit

Please send all submissions to webzine@solidarity-us.org. We will get back to you as quickly as possible, but be aware we cannot publish all submissions or engage extensively with everyone who submits an article.

Submit content either in the form of attached documents in common text formats (.doc /.docx preferably) or links to websites where the content is already published. Please clearly identify the author and title of your submission, and format your submission much as you would like it to appear before submitting it so that we don’t have to guess where subtitles or italicized text, etc., are supposed to go.

Comments

We seek to publish material that is both informative and provocative, and which will provide a starting point for discussion. We hope that readers will use the commenting function on our site to engage in productive discussions. Our commenting policy is open, and we don’t currently require either a login or moderation before comments can be posted. We do, however, reserve the right to remove any comments which are clearly abusive, “trolling,” racist or sexist or homophobic or otherwise clearly offensive, or unrelated to the posted content (e.g. irrelevant advertising or soliciting).
