Bob Brenner will present his view of the sources of the crash and ensuing economic dislocation, which he argues was triggered but not caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The background is a deep decline of capital accumulation—investment, employment, productivity–rooted in global overcapacity and a fall and failure to recover profitability. This has made for long-term economic deceleration and worsening crises right into the present. Facing the intractable problem of a slow-growing pie, corporate managers–especially in finance–and the rich have allied with top politicians to impose a regime of politically driven upward redistribution of wealth for the benefit of the top 1%. The focus of state policy and the corporate strategy has been the stock market—rock-bottom interest rates, stock buybacks, dividends, and borrowing instead of investment. The economy has been left extremely weak and corporations vulnerable, opening the way to meltdown.

We will be sending out an outline of Bob’s talk on Monday.

Following his presentation, there will be time for questions and discussion.
